Prussian Hussar Busby for Enlisted Man
Named to Hussar Plattfaut
Prussian Line Hussar (3rd, 11th, 13 or 14th) Enlisted Mans Busby (Pelzmutze) helmet Circa 1878. Found “out of the woodwork” in an old New England house. Enlisted style black fur covered leather busby with silver metal banner and red cloth bag. The helmet body has excellent form and firm stitching. There is loss to much of the fur (see photos) due to age BUT IT IS NOT MOTHED.
Interior has EM style Hussar leather tongued liner dry but complete. There are some small tears to the leather body (see photos). The frontplate silver furled Prussian banner with “Mit Gott fur Koenig und Vaterland” fixed with loops and leather wedges on the back. No extra holes in the helmet body. Rounded brass chinscales with early screw type retainers for the rosette. This helmet dates from the mid 1870’s so there is no Reichs cockade. Enlisted style Prussian field badge is missing.
Mounted on the top of the helmet is the Red cloth parade bag. The cloth retains its bright red color but has age related stain (see photos). Inside the helmet body there are profuse regiment and squadron marking as well as the wearer personal tag “Husar Plattfaut” (see photos). In spite of the age and condition, the helmet displays well. Finding original Hussar busbies “out of the woodwork” is very rare today. The helmet 100% all original and untouched. Bargain priced.
