French Carabinier de la Garde Imperiale Enlisted Helmet

Straight out of the woodworks - Uncleaned

Brass helmet shell with "German Silver" or "Maillechort" trim in excellent+ condition with no cracks but a few dents. The back of the shell is stamped with the issue year "1856" the re-issued serial number of "1003" and the name of the maker "DELACHAUSSÉE". Front visor lined with thin tan "basane" leather. Back visor has a holes that is only noticable from the inside as it is located under the chenille, most likely the helmet was hanging at a wall through this hole. The leather lining is also present but damaged (see photos) carefull gluing would restore the back visor lining to its good looks.

Tall brass "cimier" with stamped-out Acanthus Leaves around the edges and Laurel Branches in its center. The Front of the helmet bears a stamped-out white metal/steel bandeau. In its center a brass grenade surounded by Palmettes. The emblem is fixed to the helmet shell with two screws.

The chinscales (or chains) are made of 19 brass rings interlaced in the shape of an "8". The end of the straps is made out of a small chain on one side a a hook on the other. Stamped-out Steel Rosaces (old traces of silver paint) with sun rays held to the helmet by a brass star and screw. A red "Chenille" tops the helmet. Inside liner is all original to this helmet, some age to it, but still supple and complete. A very Rare Helmet as most of them where re-issued to firemans companies after 1870. This one is 100% original and unaltered.

In november 1865 the Carabiniers were taken from two Regiments to one Regiment and made part of the "Garde Imperiale".
