Prussian 9th Dragoon Enlisted Man Pickelhaube
Please read full description
Hanoverian 9th Dragoon Regiment (1st Hanoverian Dragoon Regt.-Koenig Carl I of Romania) Enlisted Man Model !892- after January 24, 1899. From an old collection. This is a RARE and very unusual helmet that is “as found” from a collection that dates back to the 1950’s.
Heavy black lacquered leather helmet body with subdued brass trim. No major flaws and no extra holes in helmet body. The helmet body remains in overall excellent shape and form. Square front visor trim with firm stitching. Brass spike base with regulation pearlring maintained by 4 round/split brads retained by nuts. Smooth removable spike that is the proper pattern for Dragoons (see picture).
The Frontplate is the post-January 24, 1899 Enlisted Hanoverian Dragoon Eagle with the banners “Peninsula-Waterloo-Gohrde” to commemorate this regiments service in the Kings German Legion during the Napoleonic Wars. The frontplate is brighter than the trim. This is expected due to the different metal used in the making of this frontplate and its late issue after this helmet had already seen years of service. The frontplate is held to the helmet body by original leather wedges. Inside has the original black dyed leather lining. Liner is a little dry from age and wear. Back visor with remains of markings inside (see photos). The markings are faded and cannot be easily read (see last paragraph). Original set of convex M1895 rounded chinscales over original EM cockades.
We feel that this helmet and the frontplate is a put together piece. That stated, it has obviously been in a collection since the 1950’s and has not been disturbed. The grommeted holes for the frontplate are quite narrow. The frontplate is original and now on the helmet. The posts are in the proper position.
Is this helmet an original piece? We cannot say for sure. It is a rare and uncleaned dragoon helmet from an elite regiment.
We have modified the price to make this helmet an attrative buy for the collector.
