Hessen 25th or 64th Field Artillery Officer Pickelhaube

Hessen 25th or 64th Field Artillery Officer Model 1897. In “as found” condition. Black lacquered helmet with fire gilt metal trim. Leather helmet body has good form and firm stitching. Exterior lacquer has schrunken and shows some crazing towards the front (see photos). The metal trim retains its fine fire gilded shine. Two extra holes in helmet body. The leather helmet body is the Hessen style with round front visor (green underlay), Red underlay back visor and a crossed spike base.

The spike base has officer pearlring style ornamentation that in Hessen is exclusively used by Hessen Artillery Regiments. An artillery ball ornament on top of cross base. Back spine has domed rivets over officers back spine. The helmet interior has light tan sweat leather and silk headliner that shows wear and stains. The frontplate is the gilded Hessen rampant Lion with open crown secured by screw posts. Guilt rounded chinscales on rosettes. Standard Reichs Officer cockade on right side and the non-serrated Hessen cockade on left side. 

We believe this to be an original WW1 used helmet for officer that was at one time used in the infantry. Helmet need TLC.
