Prussian 2nd Foot Artillery Officer Pickelhaube
EXTREMELY rare helmet
Prussian 2nd-Foot Artillery von Hindesin - 1st Pommeranian - 3rd Company, Officer helmet Model 1897. Black lacquered leather helmet body with fine fire gilt metal trim. Helmet has perfect form and firm stitching. The exterior lacquer is in excellent condition with no lacquer loss (see photos). No extra holes in the helmet body. The interior of the helmet has sweat leather and green silk headliner. Both interior visors lined in red and green which is proper for officer helmets.
The frontplate is the Prussian line Eagle with the FWR monogram on the eagles chest. On the lower leg portion on the is the banner “Colberg 1807” which commemorates the units service at the Siege of Colberg by Napoleon in 1807. The frontplate is extremely RARE as there was only 1 company of Foot Artillery wore this frontplate. There is damage noted, below the line that is covered by chinscales. The upper sharp ends of the banner are missing (see PHOTO). We assume that is was broken off when the field cover was removed. Although missing, it is not detractive to the helmet as it is hidden by the chinscale.
Round spike base with star retainers. Artillery ball finial that is removable. Rounded chinscales on rosettes. Officer Reichs and Prussian cockades. This is an EXTREMELY rare helmet. Wonderful and 100% original piece. Amazing condition. Price discounted due to damage to frontplate.
