It is rare to find this Regiment's Landwehr helmet.
Prussian/Nassau 88th Infantry Regiment (2nd Nassau ) Landwehr Officer Model 1897-99. This regiment was a part the Prussian Army that served during the Napoleonic Wars. The battle honor banners "La Belle - Alliance-Mesa de Ibor-Medellin" were given to the regiment in 1899 by Kaiser Wilhelm II. The La Belle Alliance was the German name for the Battle of Waterloo (Gnl. Blucher's wishes) and Mesa de Ibor and Medellin commemorates the regiment service fighting Napoleon in Spain. Black lacquered leather helmet body with highly gilded brass trim. The helmet body has excellent form and firm stitching. Exterior lacquer shows age with some very mild crazing. The interior of the helmet has officer sweat leather and silk headliner that is dirty but complete. Inside the helmet body is the paper tag of the maker in Berlin (see photo).
Firm stitching to visors. The inner visors of helmet are red and green as is common for officers. No extra holes in the helmet body as plate is a perfect fit. The front plate is the Prussian Line Regiments heraldic eagle without "Mit Gott etc". The "La Belle-Alliance-Mesa de Ibor- Medellin" banners are separately attached (see photos). The Prussian style silvered Landwehr cross is attached where the Eagles legs meet the body (see photo). The frontplate is 100% original and finely gilded. It is held to the helmet by screw attachments. Officer style spike and base held to helmet body with star screw retainers. The the spike top is non removable. Flat officer chinscales on rosettes. Reichs and Prussian 2-piece officer cockades. This helmet is 100% original. It is rare to find this Regiment's Landwehr helmet.
