Hessen 117th Infantry Life-Guard Regiment for the Grand Duchess, Officer, Model 1897. From an old collection but has been restored in the past. Black lacquered helmet body with fine fire gilt trim. Helmet body in very good form and firm stitching. Exterior lacquer has age related creases but no lacquer loss. No extra holes in helmet body. Inside helmet has replaced sweat leather but original brown silk headliner (see photos). Inner visors colored red and green. Back visor is bent in slightly (see photo).
All metal trim is fine fire gilt and has not been polished. Special Hessen style equilateral crossed base with Hessen style fluted spike top. Hessen front plate is the Hessen rampant Lion with the banners and blackened numbers "1697" and "1897", commemorating the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Regiment. Helmet front plate is 100% original to this helmet. Frontplate affixed to the helmet body with diagonally placed screw posts (see photos). Original slightly rounded gold chinscales on rosettes. Officer style Reichs and non-serrated Hessen cockades. This is a genuine Hessen 117th officer helmet that has had restoration work in the distant past. Extremely rare find in today's market.
