Hessen 115th Leib-Garde Infantry Enlisted Pickelhaube
A rare regimental helmet.
Hessen 115th Life Guard Infantry Regt. (1st Grand Ducal Hessen Regt.), Enlisted Man Model 1897. We picked this up from a fellow collector at the SOS. The helmet is original but was all in pieces. We carefully spent time putting it back together. Black lacquered helmet body with German silver trim. Helmet has good form and firm stitching. The exterior finish is matte with age (see photo) but has no cracks or flaws. There are no extra holes behind frontplate (see photos). Helmet interior has leather EM style headliner. The Interior visors are natural leather that has illegible markings with exception of dates 1912 and 1913. All metal parts are gray toned with oxidation and age .
The German silver metal trim has not been polished. The front plate is the Grand Ducal double wreath Lion with flat EM style Star of Hessen on the breast. Over frontplate and underneath the front leg of the spike base is the metal banner "1621" commemorating the founding date of the regiment. Hessen style crossed spike base topped by an EM style fluted removable spike. Cross base has dents on left side (see photos) and secured to helmet body with round domed retainers. Hessen style metal plume support inside helmet bell to support spike base. EM leather chinstrap on M91 side lugs. Chinstrap metal is original, but the leather has been replaced. EM stamped one-piece Reichs and Non-Serrated Hessen cockades. Cockades have been repainted. This is an original helmet that has been professional restored. This is a rare regimental helmet that would be a great addition to any collection.
