Rare Wartime Ersatz (replacement) material Prussian Guard du Corps Reserve Officer Aspirant helmet to parade.  Beautiful and all original helmet brought home by a Veteran who was stationed in Berlin in the early 1950's.  This helmet is unusual in many ways.  The helmet was entirely custom made for the GdC trooper by using existing stock of helmet parts.  The helmet body is custom made of steel that has been plated or chemically washed with Tombak to resemble a standard GdC tombak helmet with Silver edging.  The tombak has been worn through in places showing the steel body.  The helmet bell and front visor looks like it was initially made to be a Jaeger zu Pferde helmet.  The JzP EM front visor resembles that of  officer but is uniquely different and lined with green marocain.  There are  pre-punched holes for an eagle front plate and 2 punched holes for the Guard Star front plate. The raised seam in the back is standard for an officer model helmet.   Top of helmet has punched holes for both elongated EM spike base and squared officer spike base.  The gentleman we purchased the helmet from told us that at one time he had the officer style base and fluted spike but it was lost over the years.  The back visor is the standard Kurassier scalloped style with rounded back. Only markings in helmet body are the number "416" stamped into the helmet behind the frontplate.  Overall exterior appearance is that of a Guard du Corps officer style helmet.  Interior of helmet has officer style sweat leather and silk headliner.  Liner originally made just for this helmet.

Back visor was originally covered with tan leather that is now detached.  We still have the leather but is has shrunken with age.  A small section of the silver trim on the back visor has separated from the helmet (see photo). Previous owner told us the helmet was dropped many years ago causing the separation.  Frontplate is the Prussian Guard Star without banner with a gold Landwehr Cross attached to the top strand of the star.   There is no enamel in star as it should be for Reserve Plates (small brass defect at lower left).  Large rounded tombak chinscales with clover leaf rosettes on mounded screw retainer.  Large kurassier style 2 piece officer Reich and Prussian cockades.  On top of helmet is an Officer quality German silver parade Eagle with gold crown.  Officer eagle standing on a silver EM style football base.  Eagle secured to helmet body with original washer and a simple nut.  As a One Year Volunteer, the trooper had to buy his own equipment and train with the Enlisted ranks until he takes the Officer exam. Thus the helmet will have EM components that are easily replaced with officer parts when the trooper takes his commission.

Helmet shows use but is overall in excellent condition.  We have carefully looked over this helmet and feel that it is completely original.  A prominent fellow collector also stated that this is a fine helmet that is proper for WWI era utilization of of parts and materials (Ersatz) that was most likely assembled in the factory directly.  Unique and Rare helmet that shows the ingenuity of the German helmet makers of the WWI era.
