Very Rare pattern Helmet 1871-87

Baden 109th Leib Grenadier Regiment, Enlisted man Model 1871-87 with white parade plume. Heavy black lacquered leather helmet body with German silver trim. Early style M71 helmet body that was modified to conform with the Model 1887 chinstrap change.

Helmet body shows age and use but is in overall excellent condition. Exterior lacquer uneven but no lacquer loss. No extra holes in helmet body. Back visor has numerous markings that include “R 109 and 1891”. (See photos). Other markings not as legible. Soldiers tag inside the helmet bell “Soldat _____ 3 Komp. 2 Ersatz Batl. Le__ _nf Regt NR 109” ( see photos). German silver metal trim.

Early style spike base with pearl ring. Mounted on spike base is tall EM style silver plume Trichter with white hair plume. Early style non-vented back spine. German silver Baden Leib Regiment Griffen with star in center. The frontplate is held to helmet body with screw retainers which is proper for early pattern helmets. Model 1887 chinstrap change hooks mounted over single Baden EM cockade. Unusual leather chinstrap M87 that has silver end pieces fitting over hooks ( see photos).
